Director of Cypress School and Behavioral Services

Nate Yates has served as Director of Cypress School and Behavioral Services since June of 2020. He began as Assistant Director in June of 2011. He has worked in the field since 1998 beginning as a Direct Support Provider in residential group homes for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Nate began teaching in 2004 in a Non-Public School in Richmond. He worked as a public middle school Special Day Class and Resource teacher in Marin from 2007 to 2011. During this period, he began teaching weekend sessions of film and video production as part of a pilot program combining project-based learning and social emotional learning for neurodivergent teens and young adults, that eventually became Autistry Studios. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from UC Santa Cruz in Film and Digital Media. He completed his Masters in Special Education at San Francisco State University in 2010.

Since joining United Cerebral Palsy of the North Bay, Nate has helped facilitate the expansion of Cypress School from four classes to ten, and the opening of the Primary Campus. In addition, the Adaptive Behavior Program has doubled in size during his tenure. Cypress School provides a unique blend of functional academics, vocational training and employment exploration, and independent living skills in a therapeutic environment and supports students with a wide range of learning, behavioral, and medical needs. Cypress School offers an enriched staffing ratio, emphasis on integration and community-based instruction, and experiential, social and emotional learning opportunities.
